Chapter Eight

Amber wanted to talk to another woman. She would have called a girlfriend, but on a Saturday night, she figured everyone would be out. Besides, she didn’t want to have to explain a lot of things. She picked up her cell phone and punched in Brenda’s number.

“Amber?” Brenda said. “Are you okay? Is anything wrong?” Her brother’s fiancée sounded concerned.

“Everything’s fine. In fact, it’s warming up and if it melts enough, I think I’ll drive back to the apartment tomorrow and check my mailbox.”

“We’re moving you out next weekend, right?”

“Yup, that’s the plan, as long as you all are still available to do it.”

“Do you want to talk to Blake?”

“No, not this time. Actually, I called to talk to you.”

“Sure. What’s up? Do you need to know something about horses?”

“No, it’s...well, it’s kind of a man problem.”

“You’re asking me?” Brenda sounded surprised and Amber figured she had a right to be, considering their history. They hadn’t always gotten along.

“Yeah, you’ve put up with my brother off and on all these years. And, well, you probably dated when you two were apart...” she trailed off, not sure if it was a sore subject, but heck, they were back together, and this time for good.”

“Uh-huh,” Brenda said in such a way that gave Amber a clue she wasn’t alone.

“Blake’s right there, isn’t he?”

“Yes, but go ahead. We have nothing to hide from each other.” She laughed and Amber heard a muffled voice.

“Well, I’ve kinda met this guy...”

“Really?”

She sounded way too excited, Amber thought. Maybe women in love felt everyone else should be too. “It’s really no big deal,” she said hastily. “In fact, I probably won’t see him again. He lives way up here and I’ll be going back to Seattle.” Brenda didn’t say anything, didn’t interrupt or ask any questions, so Amber felt encouraged to continue, and gave the other woman a brief version of her time spent with Mick—minus the kisses.

“Well, of course, I don’t know the man, but it seems to me he’s put the ball in your court. He’s certainly shown his interest in you—bringing the books, helping you with the animals, taking you to town and dinner, and inviting you to ride his horse—even an offer for riding lessons.”

“I suppose, but I’m not like those women he talked to at the restaurant. I don’t ride. I don’t know anything about farming and animals. I’m a city girl.”

“Sounds to me like you’re making excuses.”

“Excuses?”

“Reasons why he wouldn’t like you, why it’s impossible for you two to get together. Seattle is not that far away. Take him up on his offer for a riding lesson,” Brenda urged.

“What if I get hurt?”

“You’re thinking of your brother, aren’t you when he went riding with me last year...or do you mean—”

“I don’t know, Brenda. Maybe both.”

“Sometimes you just have to take chances, Amber,” Brenda said softly, maybe thinking of herself.

Amber thought for a moment. “I suppose you could be right,” she said and then purposely changed the subject. Will you and Blake be home tomorrow, or do you have to work?” They talked a few minutes more and then hung up.
